University of San Diego


General School Information

The University of San Diego is a  private Catholic University, founded in 1949. Located on 180 acres overlooking the city of San Diego, Mission Bay, and the Pacific Ocean, the University of San Diego provides a rigorous and rewarding academic environment where students and faculty are partners in learning. USD is consistently ranked as the #1 most beautiful campus in the country. There are a lot of study-abroad opportunities, with USD consistently ranked in the top 10 schools in the nation for study abroad programs. The on-campus dining facilities are consistently ranked as some of the finest in the country.  In athletics, USD competes in the WCC, with 17 Division 1 teams and 23 club sports. The school’s campus is located a short drive away from some of the best beaches in the world, with many upperclassmen living steps from the sand. There are 53 bachelor’s degrees available, with highly ranked business and engineering programs leading the way. 

Rugby Information

USD rugby was founded in 1980, and recently celebrated 40 years of existence with the establishment of the USD rugby hall of fame. USD rugby has historically been a strong program, with a 2014 Final 4 appearance being the furthest national run for the team. USD is a D1AA/NCR hybrid program. USD competes in the very strong Gold Coast conference. USD plays a competitive 7s season in the fall with a 15s league season in the spring. The 7s season will include travel to 7s tournaments like the “West Coast 7s” tournament – the most prestigious invitational in the country. USD Rugby trains five days a week with games mostly on Saturdays. Training time is split between fieldwork, and strength and conditioning sessions in the gym. USD has a dedicated strength and conditioning coach as well as an outstanding on-field coaching team. The head coach, Charlie Purdon, has played professional rugby in three countries. The backs coach, Brett Thompson, has represented the USA in 7s and 15s rugby. The 7s coaching staff also features USA 7s players Stephen Tomasin and Perry Baker. USD is the home of the San Diego Legion, one of the best teams in Major League Rugby. The Legion plays its games on campus at USD, and there is a close bond between the two programs.
