Why did you choose your school?
I chose the University of South Carolina because it felt like the best overall fit for me, academically, socially, and personally. After visiting several schools and growing up in Charleston, UofSC stood out among them all. Every time I visited campus, I felt welcomed and excited to be there, and it quickly became clear that this was where I belonged. Being close enough to home was an important factor. Still, I also wanted the experience of attending a large university, especially one in the SEC, which made South Carolina the clear choice. Additionally, the Molinaroli School of Engineering's ranking in the top 100 nationally reassured me that I would receive a strong education and earn a meaningful degree. Rugby also played a role in my decision; as a Division 1-AA program, UofSC offered the high-level competition I was seeking. Overall, UofSC provided the academic opportunities I needed along with the social and athletic environment I wanted.
What was your process of being recruited?
My recruiting process was fairly simple. I didn’t start playing rugby until my senior year of high school, so I didn’t have a traditional recruiting experience. However, Coach John Roberts was extremely helpful. While visiting campus, I emailed him, and he responded the same day to set up a meeting. After that conversation, I committed on the spot.

What are your favorite parts about being a member of the rugby program?
My favorite part of being in the rugby program is, first and foremost, the rugby itself. We maintain a high level of competition in both 15s and 7s, playing strong opponents both within and outside our conference, which provides great opportunities for player development. Beyond the game, the club's social aspect plays a huge role. Being part of this team is a brotherhood that only a sport like rugby can create, going to battle, putting your body on the line every game, and risking injury for one another forges a bond like steel forged in fire. We win as a team and lose as a team, often saying “15 as 1,” which reinforces that success or failure never falls on just one person. Spending time together on and off the pitch allows us to build chemistry beyond the game, making us stronger as a unit. We aren’t just teammates; we’re brothers.

What are your favorite parts about being a student at your school?
One of my favorite parts about being a student at the University of South Carolina is the campus itself. Located in downtown Columbia, it offers easy access to the surrounding city while still feeling like its own distinct community. SEC football is also a significant part of the student experience, bringing an energy and culture to the school unmatched at similar institutions.
How do you balance schoolwork and rugby?
While rugby is demanding, it is also understanding. If I have a major exam and need to miss practice, that flexibility exists. That being said, balancing both is not easy. I dedicate most of my time outside of rugby to academics to maintain a 3.8 GPA. I manage this balance by keeping my priorities straight, recognizing that I am a student-athlete and that my education always comes first.

What does a typical day and/or week look like for you?
A typical week consists of classes during the day, rugby practice twice a week in the evenings, and games on weekends during the season. Day to day, my schedule varies, but it usually includes classes, studying or completing homework, and spending time with friends. Most of my free time falls on weekends, especially around football games.
What’s the biggest challenge about playing rugby at your school?
The biggest challenge is balancing academics and athletics. As an engineering student, a significant amount of my time is dedicated to coursework. However, since rugby is a club sport at UofSC, it remains manageable with discipline and effort.
Besides rugby, what else are you involved in on campus?
Besides rugby, I am also involved in a campus fraternity and active in my local church and bible study.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with a high school player who is interested in your school?
If you’re interested in the University of South Carolina, I can’t recommend it enough, beyond just rugby. It offers the experience of a large state school while still allowing you to find a close-knit community that feels like home. If rugby is something you’re considering, I have even more positive things to say. The team is welcoming to everyone, regardless of experience, and encourages anyone interested to come out and see if it’s the right fit.
